Agree on the work
Jon looks at the tree, what it is near and how the crew can reach it. You agree on the work, cleanup and price before anything comes down.
In sections, not in one piece
The bucket truck goes where it fits. Backyard trees get climbed on spikes, and large trees come down in sections with ropes and rigging.
Chipped, loaded, hauled
Brush goes through the chipper and logs get loaded and hauled, unless you want to keep the wood. Stump grinding is in the scope only if you want it.

Ask for the scope in writing
- Which trees come down, and the work on each
- Whether the stump is ground, and how deep
- What gets hauled away and what stays as logs or firewood
- Cleanup, plus any grading or seeding
What affects the price
Tree size and number, how close it stands to the house, the fence and the lines, whether the truck can reach it or it has to be climbed and roped, plus stump work and haul-away.

Straight answers.
Can you reach a tree in the back yard?
If the bucket truck can't get there, the tree gets climbed and roped down in pieces. That's slower, so it costs more than a tree the truck can reach from the drive.
Do you haul everything away?
Yes. Brush goes through the chipper, logs get loaded and hauled. If you'd rather keep the wood for your own stove, say so when Jon looks at the job.
Can you work near power lines?
Jon has taken down trees grown into service lines and alongside high-voltage lines. If a line is down or touching the tree, the power company has to deal with the line first.
Do you grind the stump?
Yes, when it is included in your scope. Discuss the depth, leveling and whether chips stay or are hauled away. More on stump grinding.
Do you give written estimates?
Yes. Ask for the trees, the work, stump options and haul-away in writing, so you can compare the same work between quotes.
